Scott Schauer at Deschutes Brewery![]() Swing by the Deschutes Brew Pub on your First Friday Art Walk and check out our March artist of the month: Scott Schauer Learn a little more about Scott from the words of Scott, Me? I’ve lived as far east as Colorado and hunkered down in Ketchum, ID., White Pass, WA., and Mt. Rainier National Park. I spent a truly adventurous summer in Cordova, AK. as well as the ever popular I-5 corridor in cities like Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, and Eugene. But I call Bend, OR home. Influenced, you bet! Spending my formative youth in the beautiful Pacific Northwest has brought me the greatest joy imaginable. The exposure to the mountains, sea, forests and high desert has shaped me like wind against the sand. Each location has taught me to respect the outdoors, to tread lightly, be the kindness to all living things, not to mention a few heaping doses of humility. Real life. It exists outside of your comfort zone, but mostly outside your house. This whole dream started as a young mischievous lad. I learned how to ride a bike and how to ski. I traveled the northwest looking for adventure. I also loved to draw growing up. There was a very creative side that reared itself periodically. My folks encouraged me to pursue anything that made me happy, (like a career... thanks, dad). Although my talents were raw, and technology was bubbling to the surface, I knew it was just a matter of time before the tech / art collision. Barb Gonzalez at The Oxford![]() Join The Oxford Hotel for First Friday #inbend! Throughout the month of March, we'll be displaying Barb Gonzalez's photographs of Central Oregon...and beyond. Barb made Bend her home in 2009 and, over the last 10 years, her photos of the #pnw and other destinations often appeared in the travel section of local newspapers (namely "The Bulletin" in Bend and "The Register-Guard" in Eugene). Magazines including "Travel World Magazine", Alaska and Horizon Airlines’ "Alaska Beyond" in-flight magazine, "Cascade Journal", "Outdoors NW", and "Oregon Wine Press" have also featured her art. Her popularity as a photographer reflects her considerable skill. Barb works to capture the essence of a place to create memorable images. Her refined perception of the subject tells a story — from vast mountain landscapes to close-up views of a determined, blooming foxglove winding its way through a rusting truck bumper. Subject proximity in her scenes further engages the viewer. “I hope to share the beauty of both nature and manmade things,” she says, “so those who view my photos are as touched as I was when taking the shot.” Barb will be in our lobby during #FirstFridayBend. Come say hello and view the photographs included in the exhibit! National Women's History MonthWomen’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” Celebration of Downtown Bend's Women EntrepreneursIn Downtown Bend we have over 45 women-owned businesses. Women are a driving force in shaping our Downtown's future. With over 385 businesses and 4,000 employees Downtown Bend is the largest employer in Bend. Successful small locally-owned business are vital to a thriving economy. In recent years, there has been a movement in our community to focus their attention (and dollars) on companies owned by underrepresented demographics, such as women. Whether it's a women's owned clothing boutique of a marketing company, supporting female-owned businesses is important. Click here for a full list of female owned businesses in Downtown Bend - How many can you support during the month of March? Bend Women's March![]() Bend Women’s March! Bend Women’s March is a month-long celebration in Bend, Oregon, of all the ways women are shaping our awesome community through arts & culture, business, and outdoor adventure. Participants are encouraged to build and share their own itineraries with March cultural events, urban adventures, and outdoor escapes. Learn more here. ![]() What do you get when you put together two beautiful ladies, two friendly dogs, a heap of creativity & a desire to ‘pay it forward’ and give to change the world? You get FORGE HUMANITY! Forge Humanity is a unique boutique where every single product is attached to a cause. This means that when you purchase something from Forge Humanity, you can be assured that your money is going to help someone else on this planet. Pretty cool. Owned and operated by Amy and Tiphane (and their two pups, Maximus & Foster) walking into Forge Humanity feels (to me) like a breath of fresh air, a cool clean forest, the crisp clean energy of standing a looking at a waterfall. The store is clean, the products well displayed, and Amy and Tipahane are friendly, loving and knowledgeable. You can shop their products online, but I wouldn’t want to miss the experience of their cute little downtown Bend location. Amy and Tiphane relocated to Bend from Denver in 2009 in search of a place they could call home that would have enough land for the animals they loved dearly, especially their horses. They visited Bend, found the perfect place for their family, and uprooted and moved with no jobs – just faith that they would leap, and the net would appear. Having no shortage of intelligence and creativity – they were able to take such a huge change in stride. Originally, they opened One Eyed Sister, a vintage eco-friendly coffee cart. This endeavor was fun and educational for them, and it led them to their next dream of having a cute little downtown business, which because Forge Humanity. But, Forge Humanity in Downtown Bend is just the seed of a much larger dream to be able to expand what they do, both online and with additional storefronts (possibly with the next location in Portland?). Forge Humanity was founded with the idea that “we might not be able to help everyone, but everyone can help someone!” Without a doubt, I can say that Amy And Tiphane helping ‘someones’ by carrying products exclusively from conscious companies, sharing a portion of their profits with those in need, actively helping people and animals in our Bend community, and – honestly- by just showing up everyday with their big hearts open ready to serve. Keep up to date with Forge Humanity, and their new and changing product lines by connecting with them on Facebook and Instagram, and make sure to visit their store at 126 Minnesota Ave in Downtown Bend.
