Trash Service Saved Downtown
PARTNERSHIP FORGED TO HELP KEEP DOWNTOWN BEND MAINTAINED
DBBA works with Bend Garbage & Recycling to save trash receptacle service
The Downtown Bend Business Association announces a partnership with Bend Garbage and Recycling for the continued service of the downtown trash receptacles.
The 30+ on sidewalk black receptacles were installed by the Bend Urban Renewal Agency over a decade ago as part of the Downtown Streetscape Improvement Program. Due to budget reductions, the City of Bend Public Works Department was no longer able to fund this service for the downtown central business district. With no solution to funding this service, the receptacles were potentially destined for removal.
Working with the City of Bend, the DBBA met with Bend Garbage and Recycling and proposed the idea of having the waste hauler perform the service as a donation to the nonprofit business association. “This is a program that is essential to make an urban downtown function, but no one thinks about it,” said Chuck Arnold, Executive Director of the DBBA. “However, if it weren’t for Bend Garbage & Recycling’s enormous generosity and support for downtown, we would have faced a situation that may have been detrimental to the vitality of downtown Bend.”
The DBBA is a private nonprofit organization representing approximately 325 businesses and 85 property owners working to keep Downtown Bend vibrant. The organization is responsible for downtown beautification, cleaning and maintenance, marketing, events and keeping the business environment healthy.
