Blue Star Salon
1001 Wall Street #103
Blue Star Salon will be featuring the quit work of local artist Pat Pease. She has won awards for her work and is part of a quilter’s guild.
” I am a Bend-area fiber artist. Color is my main interest, and I continue to study its theory and history. I like to combine unusual colors, patterns and textures, and find that part of the joy in putting a piece together is finding that unique piece of fabric that is just right.
I am currently working on a series of string quilts, made with strips (strings) of fabric sewn together. I prefer to use irregular shapes that produce a more random effect. When I add the machine stitching, I feel I am adding my mark on the piece. I might use 50 different threads of varying weight just to get the right texture to appear on the fabric.
When not working, my time is spent with my husband and the three best dogs in the world, Ruby, Frida, and Lola”
Blue Star Salon will be hosting an Artist’s reception Friday from 5 to 9 and will be serving wine, beer, appetizers, and non-alcoholic beverages. The Blue Star Stylist will also be on hand to answer any of your hair questions and will be doing walk in Feather Extensions (the biggest selection of colors!) and Tinsel Strands.

Anita Johnson finds her artistic roots in the Wild West, as a Central Oregon local for more than 30 years. She’s always had a flair for creativity and crafting, and her more recent foray into painting reflects her artistic influences from years of working with fabrics as a seamstress, creative crafting, and years as a professional hairstylist. Seen through her perspective as a cowgirl, Anita’s acrylic and mixed media artwork show her attention to detail and often playful and lighthearted look at her subjects.

Mockingbird Gallery
869 Wall Street #100
Mockingbird Gallery presents our April show entitled “A Deeper Clarity” which includes new works by Edwin Koch. The exhibit opens First Friday/Art Hop on April 1st from 5 to 9 pm. Please join up for a glass of wine and a chance to meet Edwin, and to view his meticulously detailed still life oil paintings. Music will be provided by Rich Hurdle and Friends during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 5 to 9 pm. The exhibit will continue through the end of April.
Oregon artist Edwin Koch is a realist, and some have described his style as Super Realism. Through the use of oil on apple wood panels, Edwin strives to use classical values to guide his picture making decisions such as objectivity, formality, balance, simplicity, dignity, restraint and austerity. His still life paintings have an almost luminescent clarity. Upon closer examination, the viewer finds a deeper clarity – a subtle world of intricate and unusual harmonies, which seems to transform disparate shapes into a single enchanting pattern. Edwin spends a lengthy amount of time 250 to 500 hours per painting to achieve striking effects through a combination of painterly techniques, artistic intuition and a meticulous attention to detail.

Lester Newell’s PERSPECTIVES
130 Minnesota Avenue
First Friday April 1, 5 – 9 pm presents new works by Debra Fisher and Katie O’Neil.
Debra Fisher’s Nature Spirit Masks are keepers of nature’s beauty and are meant to be joyful reminders of our connection with nature, deepening our appreciation for this beautiful planet. They first appeared to her in dreams and have always felt like sparks of the original fire. Each mask is hand cast in an original sculpted mold, using high quality wheat paste and paper made from recycled materials. They are each dressed lovingly with natural elements, handmade and decorative papers. After they have completely dried they are accented with acrylic paints and sealed with a moisture resistant permanent protective finish. She says “It is a privilege for me to create and send each mask into the world. May it bless and bring you years of light and love.”
Katie’s O’Neil’s watercolor work highlights the intimate and everyday landscapes of rural Oregon. She grew up East of Portland in the soggy Columbia River Gorge and moved to the skin-splitting Central Oregon four years ago. With every painting she aim’s to make it beautiful enough to put on the living room wall, unique enough to grab someone’s attention away from the TV, and complex enough to hold that attention once she has it. But, of course, this intention only happens in the photographic stage of the process. Once she captures and stills the conceptual moment in time, she lets her intuition take over and literally lets the paint fly out of her hand. Watercolor, then, has been a natural fit because it’s a medium that lends itself to fast, intuitive work. Not having a formal education in art has forced her naive hand to learn its own techniques when breaking down new images to paint. For her, this has always been a benefit in disguise because she’s never been locked into technical boundaries by others. In this way, she feels great freedom while she paints, and she believes that whatever she feels while she paints goes directly into her work and back out into the world. She says, “I look to my painting to help show the world what our many “Oregonians” can feel like.”

River Bend Fine Art

Join us for a one-man show of nationally-recognized oil artist Mitch Baird, of Portland, Oregon.
Artist Reception: First Friday, April 1 from 5 to 8 pm
Baird’s paintings are a realistic representation of visual space wonderfully rendered in a loose painterly style. Preferring to paint ‘en plein air’ (literally, in the open air, or outdoors), the artist has mastered depth and atmosphere possessing an understanding that ‘less is more’ – all in a bold style without fear of color.
Recent accolades include recognition in Southwest Art magazine’s ’21 over 31 Emerging Artists’ in the November 2010 issue; in 2009 Baird was awarded Best of Show & Southwest Art’s Award of Excellence at the American Impressionist Society Exhibition, the Founder’s Award in the international ‘Blossom – The Art of Flowers’ traveling museum exhibition as well as having two paintings in recent National Parks ‘Paint the Parks – Top 100’ traveling exhibition. He is represented by galleries in Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Master Artist Keith Sluder will be showing his artwork, THE LOVE INSIDE, in downtown Bend at tbdloft … 856 NW Bond Street, Suite 2 … on April 1 First Friday Art Walk. The theme this month is SECURITY.
“As we walk this earth, we all try to learn how to reason with the many hands life deals us. The security we feel will change from one hand to another.
The word SECURITY is a non-tangible concept with a thousand meanings. However, it is usually linked with feelings of non-fear, safety, and trust.
Security changes as we grow and sometimes fear will trump safety and trust. We then scramble to find ways to get it back through love, job, money or even forgiveness.
Security can be your steady wingman one day and become an illusive smoke-filled pipe dream the next. It needs to be thought of with respect as we never know how long it will be our companion.
Security only has an obligation to pay a debt one time and that is when a new life comes into this world. As a newborn, we are helpless and the only security we know is the warmth of being held in the arms of one who loves us and the heartbeat on our tiny face as we go to sleep; without fear, full of trust, and secure.
This graphite rendering, THE LOVE INSIDE, celebrates the birth of my new granddaughter Feyona.” Keith Sluder
