Family Musical Karaoke at the Tower in January

Bend, OR (Jan, 6, 2010):  What better time than the new year – and a new decade – to dress up and sing along to some movie musicals? On two Saturday nights this month, the Tower Theatre lets you release your inner Tracy Turnblad, Dorothy or Cowardly Lion.

In conjunction with 900 Wall, the Tower Theatre Foundation presents “Sing-Along Saturdays,” movie screenings featuring karaoke-style song lyrics projected on the big screen during all the big production numbers.

“These family-friendly events have been huge hits, especially at theatres similar to the Tower, all across America,” said Ray Solley, Executive Director of the Tower Theatre Foundation. “Lots of people already know the tunes to the songs in these popular films. But it’s quite an experience when you see the words and try to keep up with the performers.” Solley added, “It’s silver screen karaoke!”

January 23 is “Hairspray” (2007, rated PG.) Nikki Blonsky stars as an overweight teenager with all the right moves who decides to break the color barrier of a 1962 Baltimore TV dance show. Co-stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah and Zac Efron. (Nominated for three Golden Globes and a Grammy; won MTV Movie, Teen Choice and People’s Choice awards).

January 30 it’s “The Wizard of Oz” (1939, rated G). Follow the yellow brick road – and the on-screen lyrics – to truly experience this magical movie classic, recently remastered for improved picture clarity and audio fidelity.

The Tower Theatre Foundation owns and operates the historic venue in downtown Bend.
