‘Fabrications’ – The Art of Quilting

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) is partnering with Arts Central to host the first juried art quilt exhibit to be held in Bend, Oregon.  Fabrications – The Art of Quilting opens at Arts Central on Friday February 3, 2012.  Opening night coincides with the monthly First Friday Art Walk in Bend.  Join us that evening from 5pm to 8pm to meet the artists, explore their creative processes and preview the 2012 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show poster and raffle quilt.  The exhibit will include more than 30 quilts and showcase artists from around Central Oregon throughout the month of February.

Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, February 3, 2012, from 5 – 8 pm with digital art by Dorothy Freudenberg and gallery artists. The exhibition continues through February 27, 2012.

Dorothy Freudenberg, cover artist of this month’s A&E, presents color-saturated, digital media images.  Continuing to expand her skills and imagery, she creates the artwork by deconstructing and recombining digital photos, layering the constructions into collages.  The work reveals both Western and Eastern influences wherein the artist juxtaposes still, empty space with profuse imagery and intense color.  The confines of her initial, traditional photography pursuits disappear in the limitless possibilities of the complex digital media.

 Appearing with Freudenberg are other artists frequently featured in exhibitions organized by Billye Turner, art consultant.  In the February show are oils by Sandy Brooke, Joanne Donaca and D L Watson, acrylics by Gary Vincent, and bronze sculpture by Steve Tyree.

Throughout February, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend exhibits a collection of Great Basin photos shot by Bend-based professional photographer Zack Jones, whose clients include bicycle companies Trek and
Burley, as well as several magazines. Thump will not be open late for First Friday Art Walk this month.

“From sitting in my garden with a refreshing beverage to guiding bike tours around the world, I have kept a visual record of the places, people, creatures, and adventures I have experienced in photographs,” says Jones. “The prints shown at Thump Coffee are a selection of images from the Great Basin, a place of both quirky and sublime beauty.”

Jones explains that he is not a “purist,” instead embracing the tools of modern technology to make and share images as he sees them in his mind. “I see these tools as brushes and paint to a painter and find the true art in knowing how and when to use them,” he explains.

Visit Bend’s Pillars of Art  is designed to introduce tourists to Bend’s unique arts and culture scene, and to support emerging local artists.

Every three months, Visit Bend will choose one local artist to create unique chalk drawings on two large, cement pillars in the lobby of the Bend Visitor Center. The chosen artist will also have his or her framed art displayed and sold in the visitor center during the three-month period, including First Friday Art Walks.

Potters for Education (PFE) is partnering again (and continuing the December 2011 showcase) with Arts Central in January to support children’s art education. Through Saturday January 21st, local potters will show and sell their pottery at Arts Central, 875 NW Brooks St., in Bend as a fundraiser with a portion of all sales going towards Arts Central’s scholarship program for youth in need.  First Friday January 6th from 4-8pm.
In 2011, Potters for Education raised over $4,500.00 for Arts Central’s scholarship fund.  Holly Davis, PFE coordinator, says “We are committed to art education and want to give back to the community.”
Participating potters include: Diane Burns, Holly Davis, Charlene Hickey, John Kinder, Peter Roussel, Ariel Shriner, Tricia Stutheit and Cathy Willis.
Regular pottery show hours are Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm.

My paintings are more than about beauty.  I am communicating an idea, a visual memory, as I explore what happens when significant moments over a long period of time become incorporated into the fabric of my life.  I am constantly preoccupied with the color and shape of things, of landscapes, of details in larger pictures, that call to be altered, to be represented in unexpected ways.  I like to question the conventional wisdom of color.  My work is about a journey, semi abstract, incorporating a love for color and experimentation with mixed media.  I work in acrylics, layering them with collage papers, glazing, texture mediums, oil pastel, and pencil.  I enjoy the challenge of shifting from theme to theme, depending on my faith journey, involvement with family, travel, or just the quiet absorption of landscapes and places with their myriad of details, shapes and color.

            Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, January 6 2012, from 5 – 8 pm with art by gallery artists and continuing with VISIONS OF HOPE, paintings and drawings benefiting orphans in the Otino Waa Children’s Village in northern Uganda.  The exhibition continues through January 29, 2012.

Gallery artists present a wide variety of landscapes including Marlene Alexander, Joanne Donaca, Janice Druin, Ann Ruttan, and, Gary Vincent, expressionistic oil, Mike Kelly, expressionistic mixed media and Steven Thor Johanneson, realistic watercolor.  All paint images representative of Central OR.

Also continuing is VISIONS OF HOPE, with images of Africa and other scenes created by inmates of the Snake River Correctional Institution.  They proposed to institution officials to create works of art to be sold to benefit the 260 rescued children at the Otino Waa Children’s Village.  Thus art helps to heal not only children in Uganda but also serves incarcerated men in Oregon.  All sales solely benefit the children.

A two person exhibition titled “Fresh Perspectives” featuring Utah artists
Richard Boyer and Rick Graham will open the 2012 season at Mockingbird Gallery on First Friday, January 6, 2012 from 5 to 9 pm.  Please join us to see the new works, to meet the artists and to hear the jazz sounds of Rich Hurdle and Friends.
Richard Boyer divides his time between Utah and Sweden, the native home of his wife Karin.  His oil paintings depict landscapes and street scenes from all over the world – from the quiet waterways of Amsterdam to the rolling hills of Provence to the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains in America.  In each carefully crafted painting one can trace the play of light over water, buildings, mountains and people, capturing a poetic moment that is both specific and universal.  His technique draws on the traditional approach to oil painting, but with a richer textural quality.  He begins his paintings in the plein air mode, and completes them back in hi studio.
Rick Graham paints the human form in all of its beauty and magnificent
complexity using both oil and acrylic paints.  His work is suffused with a quiet
romanticism, merging colors with soft light and shadow to evoke a poetic mood.  He also paints landscapes in the plein air mode.  His landscapes are full of natural light and the energy of broad colorful brushstrokes.
The exhibit will continue through the end of January.

Throughout January, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend hosts the River Song Montessori School Student Art Show, “Vision of Peace.” For First Friday Art Walk, January 6 only, the school will also present “The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama,” multi-media prints.
The acrylics on canvas paintings displayed in “Vision of Peace” were painted by River Song children, ages three to six. These works were created as part of an ongoing study of world peace leaders including the Dalai Lama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Maria Montessori. According to River Song, “This January show is in honor of our great peace ambassadors and their contribution toward justice and peace for humanity.”
The children’s art will be auctioned in February. Funds from the auction will contribute to the development of a scholarship fund for community families, an organic hot lunch program and classroom materials.
River Song purchased “The Missing Peace” prints with a goal of collaborating among local schools to develop a values-oriented curriculum for children ages 3-6 to accompany the artwork.

“Bend Inspires Its Children: Our Future” is the theme of the newest art exhibit at City Hall beginning on the First Friday, September 2^nd. GROWING::UP, the title of the new show, is the second in a series depicting Bend as an inspiration for artists. Organized by the City of Bend Arts, Beautification & Culture Commission (ABC), artists will gain insight by being paired with one of 15 child-focused organizations in our community.

Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, September 2, 2011, from 5 – 8 pm with photography by Vern Bartley. The exhibition continues through September 30.

Vern Bartley, Bend artist, shows images from his 2010 fall four of Central and Eastern Oregon.  Fulfilling a long-anticipated desire, he traveled to Christmas Valley, Ft. Rock and points south then onward to the Alvord Desert.  Heading east he visited the Owyhee River, Pillars of Rome, Leslie Gulch, the Oregon Trail, Hells Canyon, Zumwalt Prairie and many other remote and historical sites.

Shooting NIKON digital cameras in color, b/w and b/w infrared (to record invisible spectrums of light and greater detail), the award-winning artist captured both Oregon history and beauty.  He journeyed the path less traveled with washed-out roads, days of little human contact, cattle herds to navigate and other travails – all to create the spectacular photos seen in the exhibit.

During the art walk, Typhoon! serves wine and Thai appetizers and the popular Prairie Rockets blue-grass band will entertain with the local vocal trio featuring Shirley Walkey on guitar and vocals, Patty Meehan on 5 string banjo and vocals, and Aspen Clayton on mandolin and vocals. On Thursday, September 1, 2011, Mockingbird Gallery presents “Wild & Free” a new exhibit of work by two artists devoted to wildlife conservation.  Zimbabwe artist Lindsay Scott and Texas artist T.D. Internationally renowned artist Lindsay Scott grew up in her home country of Zimbabwe and developed a love and respect for the natural world.  In her oil paintings and drawings, she captures the many moods of the magnificent creatures that go about their daily lives in the vast and fascinating arena of Africa.  Her early training as an illustrator, botanical researcher and biologist allows her to capture in exact detail the life and spirit of the wildlife.  Her primary objective is to preserve this beauty for future generations.

T.D. Kelsey’s work also reflects a keen interest in wildlife conservation.  His expressive bronze sculptures come to life and reflect the energy, personality and movement of range animals and wild horses in Texas.  His love of sculpture is based on his rodeo career and ranch life.  T.D. raises Longhorn cattle on his Texas ranch, and he is passionate about seeing the wildlife and range animals firsthand.  He then recreates his vision in a bold and impressionistic style.

Chris is a watercolorist, and will be showing a number of his recent works. Artist, designer and activist Euijin Gray will exhibit a collection of mixed media works — entitled “being. small. simple. green.” — throughout September at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend. Thump Coffee also will be open late for First Friday Art Walk on September 2.

According to Gray, her recent work is derived from spending several months in the temperate rainforest of Tennessee, where it is much greener than her high desert home of Bend. Inspired by many continuous days spent in the forest, the work displayed is very small in scale and utilizes acrylics, photos, drawings, handmade paper, wood, canvas and board.

Gray also works as a freelance visual designer under the name alpie design, primarily focused on logo design. In addition, Gray recently helped create a non-profit organization, theBedouins, an “artivism” for peace in the Middle East.

Potters for Education is partnering again with Arts Central in October to support children’s art education.  From Oct 1-23, local potters will show and sell their pottery at Arts Central, 875 NW Brooks St., in Bend as a fundraiser with a portion of all sales going towards Arts Central’s scholarship program for youth in need.

In July, Potters for Education raised over $2,200.00 for Art Centrals’ scholarship fund.  Coordinators for the show are Ceci Capen and Holly Davis. “These shows represent our best work and allow us to share time with our fellow potters. We are committed to art education and want to give back to the community”, says Holly Davis. “We continue to keep our shows fresh and exciting.  Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, October 7, 2011, from 5 – 8 pm with contemporary paintings by Gary Vincent and D L Watson and a feature by Ann Bullwinkel and Bill Logan. The exhibition continues through October 30.

Gary Vincent presents multi-hued, expressionistic acrylic landscapes interpreting Central Oregon.  He develops the composition central to the image and then works in successive, often visible layers to create movement and depth.  Study with Ovanes Berberian and Del Gish, associates of noted impressionist Sergi Bongart, influenced his use of color.  Vincent paints in the tradition of Bongart who stressed the “…spirit of painting can trump technique,” as his paintings reveal a deep affection for Oregon landscape.

D. L. Watson’s mixed media, abstract paintings, titled to broadly suggest themes such as music or environmental challenges, are non-representational in imagery.  Rather, they are expressions of the artist’s emotions that emerge as the paintings evolve in the complex layering and other applications of multiple mediums.   Artslant, a contemporary web-based art network, awarded her an Abstract Painting Showcase award and a Painting Showcase award in 2011.

 Also showing are a selection of oils by Ann Bullwinkel and Bill Logan expressing the artists’ impressions of deep space, long exposure photography, some from the Hubble Telescope.  Images range in proximity to Earth from Io, a moon of Jupiter, to the Whirlpool Galaxy, a beautiful face-on spiral galaxy about 35 million light years distant.  The couple’s interest in the images arises from Logan’s knowledge and skill as an amateur astronomer and Bullwinkel’s intent to work in abstract imagery.

The Artist Preview Day opens the exhibition and sale on Thursday, October 6, from 10am to 6pm and provides an opportunity for visitors and collectors to see the new work prior to the opening Artist Reception to be held during First Friday Gallery Walk, October 7, from 5 – 9 pm. About Judy Hoiness: A collection of watercolor and acrylic paintings on canvas of scenic and historical areas in Central and Eastern Oregon by fourth generation Oregonian and Bend resident for forty years. Judy paints from memory in the studio recalling her impressions and emotions that she had while she was exploring the land. This allows her freedom to select unusual hues, invent shapes and textures yet capturing the essence of the place. Such Oregon areas as Hoogie Doogie Mountain, Shoofly Creek, Kinzua and Rome, are just a few unusual places painted for this show.

About Thomas Hughes: His series of mechanical theaters is a recent extension of his longtime career as a furniture maker. He has now ventured into a more expressive medium, the sculptures allow him to explore his interests which include: birds, engineering, kinetic movement, wood carving, folk art, roadside attractions, and circuses just to name a few.

Mockingbird Gallery

Dan Chen and William Pickerd come together for a collaborative show entitled “Nature’s Bounty” on First Friday Art Hop and Art Walk, October 7th.  The show opens at Mockingbird Gallery from 5 to 9 pm, and music will be provided by Rich Hurdle and Friends.

The well-known art of Dan Chen is a marriage of the finest qualities of eastern and western style and technique.  Moving to the Pacific Northwest engendered in Dan a love of wildlife, and he depicts the indigenous creatures in his beautiful bronzes.  Dan uses either a wax or oil based sculpting medium depending on the size and complexity of the subject.  He uses the “lost wax” casting method in combination with a method that uses a fine ceramic shell to ensure the finest detail.  After casting, he applies his own patinas using various chemicals to give the pieces the desired color and texture.

William Pickerd, whose home is in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, is a woodworker turned sculptor of stone, a “turner” who transforms chunks of alabaster into vessels.  These bowls are exquisitely rimmed in exotic woods.  “My vessel shapes, turned very thin, allow the stone to paint scenes of mystery and drama.”  William orders hundreds of pounds of alabaster at a time from digs in Colorado, Southern Utah and Volterra, Italy.  “My alabaster comes in a wide range of colors, and can be found all over the world.”  His lathe is a Hegner VB 36 Master Bowlturner.

Examples of the sculptors’ collaboration are two pieces titled “Spring Song” and “Dreamweaver”.  The vessels consist of White Colorado Alabaster with bronze hummingbird finials.  They will be included in the exhibit.

The October 7^th First Friday Art Walk at The Nature of Words (NOW) will feature readings by local writers Suzanne Burns and Jim Churchill-Dicks, and a display of woven paper art and poetry by artist Alice Van Leunen. NOW will open the art exhibit at 5:30 p.m. and the readings will start at 7:00 p.m. Wine and beverages will be served.

Suzanne Burns’ first short story collection, “Misfits and Other Heroes,” debuted from Dzanc Books in 2009. Her last poetry collection, “The Paris Poems,” came out in December from BlazeVOX Books. Burns says she is currently writing more poems about Portland, dessert and very cute boys.

In addition to being an English Teacher at Crook County High School in Prineville, Oregon, Jim Churchill-Dicks holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College and his work has appeared in Fire Magazine, The Other Journal, Vain Magazine, Press One Quarterly and others.  His chapbook titled “Beyond Telling” was a semifinalist for the 2010 Concrete Wolf Chapbook Prize. His book-length collection of poetry titled  “Jacob Wrestling” was a semifinalist for the Tupelo Press Dorset Prize in 2005.  Additionally, he is the founder and editor of torches n’ pitchforks; an online teen literary journal established in 2008 and most recently underwritten by The Nature of Words. Alice Van Leunen’s art display will feature woven paper constructions with embellishments of thread, lettering, metallic elements, cloth, stitchery and other materials for texture and richness. Chosen materials often relate to suggested themes such as quilting, landscapes and literature, including the Delectable Mountain series with reference to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” and the Ice Nine series from Kurt Vonnegut’s “Cat’s Cradle.” In 1993, the Oregon Arts Commission awarded Van Leunen an Individual Artist Fellowship for her unique imagery.

Van Leunen’s artwork also includes poetry by Kelly Gill Holland. The poet, published in periodicals such as Modern Poetry in New York and the Oregonian, notes that early days with her father in the wilderness inspired much of her work, as did her interest in language, music and voice. The two long-time friends collaborated on themes as reflected in chosen poems that appear written or lettered on the constructions.

For the October First Friday Art Walk, Pavé Fine Jewelry in downtown Bend will be featuring the work of artists Gabrielle Taylor and Chris Eckberg. This husband and wife duo share a studio in their home, and though they pursue different mediums, art and creativity have always been a focal point in their life together.

Gabrielle is a jewelry artist working in .999 fine silver. Using Precious Metal Clay (PMC) she creates uniquely individual pieces featuring beautiful shapes and textures. She often combines quality gemstones or touches of gold with her silver work to further enhance the artistic appeal.

Chris, a watercolorist, will be displaying some of his recent work. The inspiration for his paintings lies in whatever catches his artistic eye, whether a scene from his overseas travels or a view from the kitchen window. One of these pieces was recently included in the Northwest Watercolor Society’s 71st Annual Open Exhibition.

Visit Bend doesn’t mind if people color on the walls at the Bend Visitor Center. In fact, they’re willing to pay for it.

In September 2011, Visit Bend kicked off the Pillars of Art program. Pillars of Art  is designed to introduce tourists to Bend’s unique arts and culture scene, and to support emerging local artists.
Every three months, Visit Bend will choose one local artist to create unique chalk drawings on two large, cement pillars in the lobby of the Bend Visitor Center. The chosen artist will also have his or her framed art displayed and sold in the visitor center during the three-month period, including First Friday Art Walks.

Megan McGuinness – Featured artist from October 1 to December 31, 2011

Megan was born and raised in Portland, Oregon in the early 90’s. Surrounded by the creativity and culture of the Pacific Northwest, she grasped at every chance to express herself and reinvpillars-of-art-bend-mcguiness.jpgent the natural beauty around her. Beginning with her first solo art show at 13, Megan knew drawing and painting would be a passion for years to come.Megan moved to Bend in January of 2010 and fell in love with the unique art culture that is here. She loves attending Downtown First Friday Art Walks and trips to Pak-it to find re-usable materials to paint on. Megan mixes realism with surrealism and adds a pinch of repetition to create a whimsical movement to her paintings. She hopes to make the viewer’s eyes dance with her quirky imaginings, bright colors, and fanciful characters.Megan was a resident at Poethouse Art for six months and spends time in the summer volunteering at a 4-H camp in Salem, Oregon, recently completing an all camp mural and teaching art to children. When not painting, She brings her unique touch to Ida’s cupcake cafe on Bend’s Westside. Megan hopes to continue pursuing an education in Fine Arts, but  enjoys being a student of the amazing life and natural beauty  Bend has to offer.

Raising $ to keep Downtown Bend beautiful!

For the 6th year, the Downtown Bend Business Association (DBBA) will hold the Bend Oktoberfest to raise funds for Downtown Bend beautification projects. The community event is FREE to attend & will be held in Downtown Bend on Friday, September 24th from 5-10pm and Saturday, September 25th from noon-10pm on Minnesota Avenue.

Friday evening activities will be open to attendees 21 and over and will include traditional Bavarian music, beer, food and games.

Saturday will be the Family Fest from noon-6pm and is open to everyone. Activities will include a half dozen local businesses and nonprofits providing kid activities.  Balloon twisting, face painting, and the legendary Wiener Dog races will be held throughout the afternoon.

Saturday evening will include live music, Yodeling Contests and the hammerschlagen competition (race to hammer a nail into a log).

Brews will be provided by: 10 Barrel, Bend Brewing Company, Boneyard, Cascade Lakes Brewery, Deschutes Brewery, McMenamin’s, Silver Moon and Three Creeks.

Sample great food from downtown restaurants including: 900 Wall, Astro Lounge, Blacksmith, Bourbon Street, Decoy, Deschutes Brew Pub, Giuseppe’s, High Tides, Joolz, Tart, Typhoon! and the Velvet Lounge

The August First Friday Art Walk features two shows at Arts Central: The ALT Group and the COMAG Show.

The painting group alt is a group of local painters who share information, techniques, and creative ideas. All alt members focus on alternative styles of painting that include encaustic, mixed media, collage, printmaking and acrylic. The members are: Pam Jersey Bird, Pat Clark, Terry Gloeckler, Judy Hoiness, Barbara Hudin, Mike Kelly, Justyn Livingston, Ingrid Lustig, and Ron Schultz.

Members of the Central Oregon Metal Arts Guild (COMAG) will be featured as part of the August First Friday Art Walk, on August 5^th, at Arts Central downtown, from 5pm-9pm. Their work will also be on display and for sale on Saturday August 6^th, from 10am-4pm.

 COMAG is an artisan group dedicated to promoting education, information and collaboration in the metal arts and crafts. It’s members range from goldsmiths and silversmiths through artists working in other metals including bronze, iron and steel.

 These craftspeople live and work here in Bend, and would enjoy meeting community members interested in knowing more about their art, so come on down to the Arts Central building in the park, and see some of their beautiful work. Members will be glad to explain the details of their work, and the many methods used in the production of the pieces.

The Franklin Crossing Building Atrium

Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, August 5, 2011, from 5 – 8 pm with contemporary mixed media paintings by Sandy Brooke and Alan Montgomery.  The exhibition continues through August 28.

 Sandy Brooke, Associate Professor of Art, OSU – Cascades, shows mixed media paintings reflecting her affection for multiple mediums.  Working with gouache, chalk, charcoal, oil, collage and other mediums, she paints multiple layers, removing and adding paint to create a non-linear perspective.  Combining Eastern and Western imagery in a new series, she considers “Fate and Luck.”  The artist notes, “Things we cannot explain are written off as Fate and, when things go well, we might feel we just got Lucky.  Much of life is a complete mystery.  It’s the same in painting.”

Alan Montgomery, Associate Professor of Art, Dakota State University, also shows mixed media paintings combining digital imagery, collage and painting.  He explores relationship between surface and image, creating layers of information that are buried and exposed, deconstructed and re-combined.  His most recent work, “sweetcrude,” explores “our need to consume everything” and, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, another series, “Irish History Lessons,” offers an allegorical exploration of contemporary Irish history.

Dawn Emerson enjoys the immediacy of pastel which allows her to capture the movement and energy of her subjects.  “My subjects of choice are the human figure, wild horses and ravens, rocks and waterscapes. Pastel felt familiar to me the first time I tried it.  It is a humble, yet powerfully expressive medium.  It is direct and immediate and it requires no preparation or drying, which suits my rather impulsive and impatient nature.”

“I strive to blend my love of Eastern and Western approaches to painting by combining ink with pastel.  Recently I have explored ways to combine the textural potential of printmaking including combining pastel with monoprint.”

Dawn lives with her husband Bruce on 5 acres in the volcanic high desert plateau of Central Oregon.  She teaches figure drawing at Central Oregon Community College and teaches pastel workshops in private and public venues throughout the United States.  Dawn is an award-winning signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of the West Coast.

Ken Roth was drawn to Bend, Oregon where he lives with his family, because of its natural beauty including the Central Oregon landscape, rivers and mountains.  He is a diverse oil painter who is inspired by the beauty of nature.  He paints in the plein air tradition, and his subjects also include still life, human figures and wildlife.  Ken creates art for his soul.

Nature is a point of departure and inspiration.  It is the impression that counts, and Ken’s vision unfolds in a number of ways.  Some of his landscapes are recognizable Central Oregon monuments while others only hint at their origins with a swirl of abstract color and light.  Ken explores his design language in imaginative ways and still remains faithful to the subject.  He concentrates on “the life of the paint.”

Local photographer Brian Bulemore returns to Thump Coffee throughout August with a collection of works entitled “Noun . . . Revisted.” The exhibit is a return to Bulemore’s long-running “Noun Project,” which he describes as “a series of images of people, places, and things in the context of urban landscapes, street portraiture, and object studies.” Thump Coffee will be open late for First Friday Art Walk on August 5.

“My vision as a fine-art photographer involves wandering of streets to seek out unusual objects and people, often in strange and quirky settings or situations,” explains Bulemore. “I have been amazed by the sheer number of weird and fascinating sights that I’ve stumbled across in these unscripted travels.”

Continues Bulemore, “Life for me is at its best when I am meeting people, laughing out loud, camera in hand…filled with the exhilaration of exploration, discovery, and the preservation of moments in time. Finding beauty in unexpected places, mirrors the open-minded approach I try to maintain in life each day.”

Bulemore lives and works in Bend as a photographer and mental health therapist. For the past five years, he has worked as a clinical director for a young adult mental health treatment program and is currently opening a private therapy practice. His photography has been featured in nearly 20 solo and group exhibitions and displays throughout the Northwest.

Potters for Education is partnering again with Arts Central in July to support children’s art education .  From July 1-31, local potters will show and sell their pottery at Arts Central, 875 NW Brooks St., in Bend as a fundraiser with a portion of all sales going towards Arts Central’s scholarship program for youth in need.

Last year Potters for Education raised over $3,700.00 for Art Centrals’ scholarship fund.  Coordinators for the show are Ceci Capen and Holly Davis. “These shows represent our best work and allow us to share time with our fellow potters. We are committed to art education and want to give back to the community”, says Holly Davis. “We continue to keep our shows fresh and exciting. It’s been a few days since the untimely passing of artist Vincent Van Gogh. At 37, he’d been a preacher, a painter, and most significantly, a pauper. His long suffering brother Theo, has underwritten his sibling’s many career paths over the decades, and is angry and upset by the word traveling around town. Everyone from citizens on the street to fellow painters in the café claims that Vincent died deranged, killed by his own hand in an act of suicidal insanity. Calling together friends and family, peers and opponents, Theo hopes to set the record straight once and for all. He wants to discuss his brother’s devotion to lost causes. He wants to clear the air about his medical and mental conditions. He needs to show society that his seemingly directionless relative was actually a man of great courage and masterful artistic skill, lost in the arenas of love and life, but brilliant in capturing his “impressions” of the world around him. From his earliest sketches to his final established masterpieces, Theo is convinced that his brother was easily ignored and resoundingly ridiculed based on little more than rumor and innuendo. He plans to show the reality behind the gossip. He wants them to understand his fragile family member, Vincent.

Jim Jarrett, renowned international actor, does an astounding and masterful job of portraying this great man while providing the audiences with lasting inspirational experience beyond all measure.

The Sprout Film Festival is an International touring film festival that raises their profile by showcasing films that feature their work. By presenting artistic and thought provoking films, the festival reinforces accurate portrayals of people with developmental disabilities, and exposes the media and general public to important issues. Audiences can expect an enjoyable and enlightening experience, that will not only entertain, but help break down stereotypes; promoting a greater acceptance and awareness of similarities.

Full Access is a nonprofit organization in Bend, Oregon supporting people with developmental disabilities while empowering each person to control their own life, and accordingly, make choices that exemplify that control. Founded on the four principles of freedom, authority (control), support and responsibility supports are provided in such life areas as meaningful work, volunteer experiences, social relationships, independent living and recreational experiences. A play not to be missed. This funny yet touching production focuses on the lives of a group of mentally challenged young men, who live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of a sincere, but increasingly despairing social worker. This play peers into the world of mentally challenged protagonists. The Boys Next Door is filled with great poignancy and hilarity as audiences are reminded that differently-abled individuals face unique challenges. Ultimately, this is a story with a new perspective on learning and about life and love.

Their Award Winning Wines include a 2006 Viola V Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2010 Portland Indie Wine and Food Festival and Silver Medals for their   2007 “2B” Cabernet Sauvignon and 2007 Sno Road Pinot Noir at the 2010 North West Wine Summit.

Paula Bullwinkel shows B/W photography of women and children, of her concept (both narrative and allegorical) and composition, that evoke humor and reflection.  She lived in New York City and London for 25 years where her notable professional career included photography commissioned and published by Vogue, British Elle, GQ, Interview Magazine, The London Sunday Times Magazine, The Face and others.

Carol Sternkopf presents B/W photography of nuanced floral still life and stark beach scenes that elicit deep emotion, fostering a sense of calm and identification with the image.  A B/W photographer for over 25 years, her credits include an exhibition at the Milwaukee Children’s Museum and publication in Milwaukee Magazine, Bend Living and Central Oregon Living magazines.

Beth Yoe exhibits non-traditional color photography influenced by a 30-year career in architecture and graphic design.  Captivated by suggested narrative, her aesthetic involves a vision of the beauty of things overlooked or about to be lost – intriguing contrasts of objects from the present or disappearing remnants of the past.  The artist’s photography appeared in the High Desert Journal and other publications.

Franklin Crossing also premiere’s Big City Blues & Soul with Richard Taelour, guitar and vocals, Tom Freedman, bass, and Jaxon, drums and lap steel guitar.  Typhoon will serve wine and Thai appetizers.

Lester Newell’s Perspectives fine art gallery presents Barbara Dorsey Speck as the featured artist for May. This new work has been a very personal journey for Barbara.  She wanted to try new techniques to broaden her creative growth and to challenge herself.  This show will feature works of different styles including acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, and small clay sculptures.
Barbara’s love of art began at an early age.  Her determination to study began in her early twenties and decades later she still gets excited just squeezing the color out of the paint tube!  Most of Barbara’s ideas are triggered by nature; however she says she must experience the situation, the wind, sunlight, the snow, or just standing in a field of flowers.  Sometimes she sketches and most always she takes many pictures so she can get a sound understanding of the forms.  If she is outside painting, there is a fresh loose and direct approach.  In the studio she is transported back with the sensations of the day and she lets her “art spirit” lead her on with a more creative and intuitive expression while deep in concentration.

Steven Lee Adams is a master at seeing what ordinarily goes unseen.  His goal is not to portray the majesty of Nature, but rather to bring to our attention the majestic in the deceptively ordinary.  If one studies a scene in Nature long enough, certain subtle but captivating elements begin to reveal themselves.  This is the realm that Steven loves to explore.  He chooses to look past the spectacular vista, and focuses instead on the quiet but equally spectacular scenery nearby.  His strong sense of color and composition carry his paintings toward a deafening crescendo that barely makes a sound.  This is the paradox of a Steven Lee Adams oil painting.  The reward comes if you allow the painting to quietly emerge and reveal itself to you.

Steven is a poetic painter and his images and colors relate to an emotional or spiritual sense that he feels.  He allows room for the viewer’s life experience to fill in the gaps, often creating a personal and emotional bond between the viewer and the painting.

DOWNTOWN BEND ANNOUNCES EIGHT NEW BUSINESSES

The Downtown Bend Business Association is pleased to announce eight new businesses opening in Downtown Bend. The DBBA is optimistic about the influx of new businesses that have come downtown. “Occupancy for downtown retail/restaurant spaces has climbed to 95% over the past few months. This rate puts Downtown Bend in a better position than most downtowns state and nationwide“says DBBA Executive Director Chuck Arnold.

On Brooks Street Promenade (through the Breezeway) two new businesses have opened. Wabi Sabi (930 Brooks), a very unique shop with cool Japanese toys and stuff is in the space previously occupied by Volcano Vineyards Tasting Lounge (now on Minnesota Avenue). Also on Brooks next to Cowgirl Cash is Zonni Media (924 Brooks), a marketing firm that brings together a range of services and professionals to develop a company brand and vision.

Minnesota Avenue has gained four new businesses. Laughing Girls Studio (130 Minnesota) combines new and vintage items as well as a home interior design house. The Oxford Hotel (10 Minnesota) which will offer upscale accommodations downtown starting later this month. The space previous held by Tangerine Hair Salon (currently at 10 Minnesota-on the first floor of the Oxford) is now Lemon Drop (5 Minnesota), a hair salon of a slightly different flavor and is brought to you by the same folks that operate Tangerine. Finally, The Curiosity Shoppe is now open (25 Minnesota-in the building with Thump and Karen Bandy Jewelry) with a one-of-kind selection of books, music, jewelry and a gallery of quality art.

Two new businesses have chosen Wall Street as their base. The Savy Agency (916 Wall) is an integrated marketing firm offering web, PR, and brand development services. In the space formerly occupied by Deep is now 5 Spice Bistro which provides a delicious Asian fusion menu and tasty Japanese Sushi.
