NEW EXHIBITS: “Yallah! Artivism for Peace” Fundraiser for TheBedouins.org

(Bend, OR) Can skateboarding and street art become instruments of peace between Arab and Israeli youth? That’s the mission of Euijin and Nathan Gray, local artists and founders of a new nonprofit group, The Bedouins, which will exhibit “Yallah! Artivism for Peace” throughout September at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend.

“‘Yallah! Artivism for Peace’ validates art as a vehicle for creative expression with a positive purpose,” explains Nathan Gray. Building off a previous project between skaters from Israel, Jordan, and Palestine, The Bedouins was founded in 2009 by the Grays to “develop creative projects that inspire humanity.”

For the Grays, skating art is about making connections through a common interest. Having grown up in Saudi Arabia, Nathan offers that “focusing on human experiences across divides holds potential where politics fails.”

Nathan believes that “skateboarding in its essence is about abolishing rules, flipping the script, and transforming something wasted and desolate like islands of concrete or road barriers into something positive. In this vein, skating is about transforming entrenched prejudices and misunderstandings.”

“Yallah! Artivism for Peace” is the first of a series of events meant to raise money to bring the Arab and Israeli skaters to the United States for a national tour, intended to share alternative perspectives of the Middle East using a grassroots approach. Read more at www.theBedouins.org.

The September Art Walk features the fine-art photography of Richard Frederick. Richard is an award winning photographer specializing in Fine Black and White printmaking using traditional and alternative processes, executed in his own darkroom. Each process begins when he captures his own vision of the subject matter on his film of choice using a large format (4×5) camera- or in many cases- a professional high resolution digital camera. In either case, his skill in capturing the grand range of available light is based on his experience with the zone system of exposure, and provides the foundation for the custom work that follows, resulting in Fine prints with an extraordinary range of light, detail, and tonal range. Each print is handmade from beginning (image capture) to end (printing, mounting, and matting) using the finest archival papers and other materials.

September 10, 2010, Fri @ 8pm – Trace Bundy

Trace Bundy must be seen, not just heard. Listening to his intricate arrangements is one thing, but seeing the fan-dubbed “Acoustic Ninja” play live confounds even the most accomplished music lovers as to how one person can do all that with just two hands and ten fingers. Trace was named “Most Promising New Talent” of 2008 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, as well as winning third place in the magazine’s “Best Fingerstyle Guitarist” category the same year.

September 17-19, 22-25, 2010 – Little Shop of Horrors

Cat Call Productions, the team that brought you “Cabaret” at the Tower Theatre in 2009 is very proud to present Alan Menken’s musical about a man-eating plant. Fortunes turn for a skid row florist shop one day when a well meaning assistant finds a strange and interesting new plant in the market. Seymour quickly discovers the plant has the most unusual cravings. Sunlight and water just won’t do, this plant has a taste for fresh human blood. The plant and its popularity bring promises of fame, fortune, and just maybe Audrey, the apple of Seymour’s eye. Audrey’s boyfriend, a sadistic and abusive dentist, stands between Seymour and his love. Meanwhile the plant grows into a vicious, foul mouthed, man-eater who must be fed. Soon Seymour finds himself in an ethical dilemma; should he commit the dastardly deeds necessary to feed the plant’s insatiable appetite, or should he let lady luck pass him by. What he doesn’t know is that his strange and interesting new plant has other plans . . .

Little Shop of Horrors was one of the longest running off-Broadway shows in history. The musical stage version is based on Roger Corman’s film from 1960. The musical was made into a hit movie in 1986 starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.

Showtime 8pm on Sept 17, 18, & 22-25. 4pm Matinee on Sept 19.

September 29, 2010, Wed @ 8pm – Blind Pilot & Sara Jackson-Holman

Led by the acoustic guitar and gentle voice of songwriter Israel Nebeker, Blind Pilot’s heartfelt music is the sort that cultivates devotion among fans. Portland is a city positively littered with folk-pop bands, but the sincerity and modesty of Blind Pilot’s music stands out from the pack. Once heard, the gorgeously seductive songs are not easily shaken or forgotten, as more and more people are discovering. Blind Pilot is embarking on a national headlining tour to support their magnanimous debut, 3 Rounds and a Sound, released last year on Expunged Records. The purpose of the PDXchange Program Concert Series is to bring the very best Portland artists to the Tower Theatre in Bend, Oregon and pair them up with local bands/musicians for the evening. Bend local, Sara Jackson-Holman, will open for Blind Pilot. SJH actually got her first big break after posting some of her music on a Blind Pilot fan page, making her appearance at PDXchange Program with Blind Pilot a fitting one. SJH has drawn a lot of comparisons to Feist and Norah Jones.
