Bend Premiere Real Estate
550 Franklin Suite 108
Bend Premier Real Estate – First Friday Art Walk – August 3rd, 5 – 8:30pm
Featuring photography by Jor-El Zajatz .
Jor-El takes photographs to remember the ephemeral nature of the human memory. People, places, things, and even ideas only last as long as the memory of them lasts. Lost memories are revitalized through reviewing a photograph. Historically, photography began as a form of archiving important moments and eventually began to take the form of fine art. Genuine personality and the unique perspectives of the photographers began to come into focus. This path is similar to his relationship with photography. He began collecting memories and slowly transitioned into something more design oriented and refined. The most interesting subject is the intimacy within portraits, which captures the human spirit and conveys a rich undercurrent of emotion. His candid portraiture contains the essence of human contact, aliveness, and relationship. Joe-El presents the viewer with an invitation to engage in such an experience.

The Franklin Crossing Building
550 Franklin Avenue
Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, August 3, 2012, from 5 – 8 pm with Landscapes of Central Oregon by Leslie Cain, pastel, Ann Ruttan, oil, and Gary Vincent, acrylic. The exhibition continues through August 31, 2012.
Artist Leslie Cain expresses her deep affection for the high desert in expressionistic pastels. Lauding her reverence for place, her art depicts a dramatic contrast of lights and darks that foster an inherent sense of quietude, of calm. She notes, “my pastels are doorways to those places of connection where, stepping through, we can remember who we are, why we’re here.” Cain’s art appeared as the cover of Daniel Smith Art Supply and in Southwest Art magazine.
Ann Ruttan exhibits oil paintings in a vivid palette, characterizing her painting styles over the past four-plus years ranging from impressionism to abstraction. Images include loosely impressionistic renderings of spring in pastel hues and progress through boldly colored expressionistic images to abstract color field paintings with a broad reference to Mark Rothko. The artist is widely collected in the US and appeared in the OPB series Art Beat.
Gary Vincent presents large acrylic landscapes as single canvases, diptychs and triptychs. His multi-hued, expressionistic landscapes interpreting Central Oregon scenes move increasingly toward abstraction. Painting in successive, often visible layers to create depth and interest, he follows the tradition of former instructor Sergi Bongart who stressed, “Spirit can trump technique.” Affection for his subject matter is clearly evident in the finished work.
Ceylon Blue, an event planner at Franklin Crossing, will serve appetizers and wine with the popular Tropicana performing Latin rhythms. Billye Turner organizes exhibitions for Franklin Crossing and provides additional information at 541.382.9398.

Karen Bandy Design Jeweler
25 Minnesota (behind Thump)

Tucked behind Thump coffee and Aleda real estate, Karen Bandy’s studio is not easy to find but well worth the effort.
You will see original jewelry and fine art all designed and created by Karen Bandy. The colors will wow you, the designs will intrigue you, and you’ll be amazed at how comfortable her jewelry is to wear. Once you own an original Karen Bandy design you will keep coming back for more. Most of Karen’s jewelry clients are repeat clients, and they are now collecting her paintings too. “The connection of the paintings with the jewelry is evident in my work, even though it is for the most part an unconscious connection. I’m sure the years of designing jewelry, my use of color and shapes, drives me in my paintings but I never set out deliberately to make that connection. It just happens”, says Bandy. Come see her work during the week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, First Fridays and by appointment at other times.

Nick Harsell is this months featured artist. He has been drawing most of his life and recently discovered paint markers, which gave him the ability to work larger but still intricate. From there he began searching for a style and after awhile, found it. Through dancing lines and colorful dots, which make up twisting animals, he found his unique style. Everything is an inspiration to him, from the rushing river to the people he meets, Nick harnesses the playfulness and happiness of life and uses that for his artwork.
We hope you can join us at the Looney Bean during this months art walk. We are located downtown next to the Pine Tavern right on Mirror Pond.

Mockingbird Gallery
869 Wall Street #100
On First Friday August 3rd from 5 – 9 pm, Mockingbird Gallery presents, “Visions and Observations,” a two person show featuring new works by Dawn Emerson and Fran Kievet. Please join us for a glass of wine and meet both artists. Music will be provided by Rich Hurdle and Friends. The exhibit will continue through the month of August.
Since becoming a full time pastelist in 1996, Dawn Emerson has exhibited her work in numerous national and international shows. In 1991 she was fortunate to study pastel portraiture with legendary artist Harley Brown and pastel landscape artist Albert Handell.
“Pastel felt familiar to me the first time I tried it. It is a humbling, yet powerfully expressive medium. Drawing for me is a way to experience the world, and ‘seeing’ is a process of discovery.”
Her goal is to simplify and say just enough, engaging the viewer to share in the work. “The focus of my work is a passion for movement and a thirst for energy. I paint impressionistically with pastel, using strong composition, clear focus, and bold use of color to convey the sense of movement I am after. My subjects of choice – the human figure and portraiture, wild horses and ravens, rocks and waterscapes – each evoke a strong sense of mood, presence and movement.” She consistently brings out the movement, strength and mood of her subjects through her dynamic line work and glowing, gem-like color. Considered by many as an innovator in the pastel world, Dawn’s work has evolved to become distinctly mysterious and poetic, like visual Haiku. Dawn is also making prints: monotypes and monoprints, collograph and engraving. She explores ways to create texture and depth by layering pastels and mixed media onto the hand pulled prints.
Dawn teaches figure drawing at Central Oregon Community College throughout the school year and teaches pastel workshops in private and workshop venues. Dawn and her husband, Bruce, live in the high-desert plateau of Central Oregon. Bruce is making great strides on new workspace for Dawn.
Fran Kievet is an Oregon artist living and working in Portland. For forty years she has been working as a graphic designer and painter. Her work encompasses a wide range of subjects including figurative, landscape, wild life and still life. She is continually questioning and analyzing her observations.
“My explorations in painting have always been driven by a need to merge subject matter with the complexities of design and color. Composition is paramount, and whatever subject matter I choose is a pretext for the creative process.
“In my most recent works, I am experimenting with a variety of oil painting techniques and a wide range of subject matter.”
