“ART” At Cascades Theatrical Company
What is “ART”?
“ART” is the 1998 TONY Award and 1996 Olivier Award winner for Best Play, written by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton. The play is presented by Shore Thing Productions as a benefit for Cascades Theatrical Company. The production, featuring performances by Central Oregon stage veterans Joel Clements (“The Foreigner”, “Leading Ladies”), Ron McCracken (“The Foreigner”, “She Stoops To Conquer”) and David Simpson (“Blithe Spirit”, “Noises Off”), is directed by Juliah Rae (“Steel Magnolias”, “All My Sons”) and will be presented at The Greenwood Playhouse on August 6 (Gala Opening), August 7, 12, 13 & 14 (7:30 p.m.) and August 8 & 15 (2:00 p.m.)
“ART” has been translated into over 30 languages and performed around the world. It is a one act “dramedy” that tells the story of three men who find their friendship inexplicably disrupted when one of them buys an expensive piece of modern art. While the plotline appears harmless on the surface, this seemingly insignificant event becomes the catalyst for the revelation of the men’s true feelings for each other and tests their fifteen year friendship. Emotions escalate, heated words are exchanged, and some rather profound observations suddenly unfold about the way we live our own lives.
The play will have its Central Oregon Premiere on Friday, August 6 at a gala benefit beginning at 6 p.m. at Mockingbird Gallery in Downtown Bend with the opening of an exhibit entitled, “The Power of Suggestion” featuring the works of artists Steven Lee Adams, Joseph Alleman, H.Shane Ross & Rodd Ambroson. At 6:45 p.m. the festivities will move to the Greenwood Playhouse for a gourmet reception as well as an art auction. The performance of “ART” will begin at 8 p.m. At the conclusion of the production, there will be a dessert and champagne reception with the cast as well as the auction finale. Tickets for the gala are $45. Tickets for other performances are $15.
